About

Lammath

Lammathis a free language learning platform for Tolkien's Elvish languages — Sindarin and Quenya.

Why “Lammath”?

The name comes from the Sindarin root lamm-, the intensified form meaning “resonant echo” or “great voice” — the same root Tolkien used in Lammoth, “The Great Echo,” the coastal region in northwest Beleriand where the cries of Morgoth still echoed across the land.

We combined lamm- with the Sindarin collective suffix -ath (as in elenath, “all the stars”) to form Lammath— “the echoing voices,” the languages that resonate across the ages.

It felt right for a place where ancient tongues are given voice again.

What We Teach

We offer structured courses in both major Elvish languages. Sindarin, the language of the Grey Elves and the most widely spoken Elvish tongue in Middle-earth during the Third Age, is our starting point. Quenya, the ancient High Elvish language, follows.

Each course covers vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing in the Tengwar script — the elegant alphabet devised by Fëanor for the Elves.

Our Approach

We use the FSRS algorithm (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) to optimise your learning — the same algorithm used by Anki, adapted to your memory patterns and scheduling reviews at precisely the right moment.

Lessons are short, focused, and build on each other. Five minutes a day is enough to make real progress.

Free, Forever

All learning content on Lammath is free. If you love what we're building, you can support us by becoming a supporter — which removes ads and unlocks a few extras — but the courses themselves will never be paywalled.

A Note on Languages

Tolkien's Elvish languages are real, structured linguistic creations. Tolkien was a professor of philology at Oxford, and spent decades developing Sindarin and Quenya with complete phonological systems, grammar rules, and extensive vocabularies.

Neither language is fully complete — there are gaps Tolkien never filled. Where the corpus is uncertain, we note it clearly and follow the most widely accepted scholarly interpretations.

Lammath is an independent educational resource. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Tolkien Estate, Middle-earth Enterprises, or any rights holders. The Elvish languages are studied here for educational and fan purposes. Decorative artwork is stylistically inspired by Tolkien's world; all authentic Elvish text used throughout is sourced directly from Tolkien's published works.
